Choosing Your Nerf Gun...

There is no 'best' nerf gun. Every blaster has its pros and cons. This page contains a summary of the specs and uses of most nerf dart guns available in stores or on the used market. We hope you find it helpful when deciding which foamy dart guns to equip yourself with.

No Nerf Disc Shooters
All disc shooters are awful. None of them are included on this guide.

The Blasters In This Guide Are Separated by Class...
In general, we recomend a loadout of:
(1) a good medium-range blaster
(2) a good pistol or shotgun as backup
Special weapons are best used within a small squad or group. Only experienced players should go about using them solo in competitive games.

Bolt Action
- Buzz Bee Hunter

Legend:
Action: mechanism for priming the gun to fire.
Propulsion Mechanism: how the gun fires the dart.
Darts: what kind(s) of darts the blaster fires.
Accuracy: Excellent/Good/Fair/Poor
Effective Range: Range at which one can reasonably expect to hit a nonmoving target's torso with at least 66% accuracy. This is almost always shorter than the outlandish range claims made on the toy's retail box.

Medium Range - Pump Action

Alpha Trooper
Price: $18 at Target
Action: Pump action, Slamfire capable.
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 12-drum stock.
Darts: streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: ~20-30 feet
Pros: Can slam-fire. Pump action feels very natural.
Cons: Weak bolt sled and inverse plunger limit its modding potential
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Commentary: This is a solid zombie-killing weapon. Good performance, good price, few modifications required. Using an 18-mag from a Stampede can will reduce jamming while slam-firing

Elite Alpha Trooper
Price: $18-20
Action: Pump action, Slamfire capable.
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 12-mag stock.
Darts: streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: ~20-30 feet
Pros: Everything good about the origional Alpha Trooper, but now with a direct plunger system!
Cons:
Recommended Modifications: AR removal adds maybe 5-7 feet to range. Adding some kind of vertical foregrip to the pump will improve overall ergonomics and make this blaster basically perfect.
Commentary: for its price, this is a rock-solid entry-level blaster.
Kieran's Commentary: I would recomend this above all else for new player coming to an HvZ or form war game. It feels good in my hands, rarely jams, is reliable, I love it.

Buzz Bee Belt Blaster
Price: $20
Action: pump action
Propulsion Mechanism: spring/plunger
Ammo Capacity: 30 (chain)
Darts: buzz bee micros (or any nerf dart with 1/8" cut off the end)
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 30 feet
Pros: This gun gives good performance in its stock configuration, and requires little to no modifications to function well. Vertical foregrip is comfortble.
Cons: The links in the orange ammo chain are somewhat fragile. It is wise to make some sort of enclosure for the chain, such as this or this.
Recommended Modifications: Chain enclosure.
Commentary: Looks like the spartain laser from halo. Minus the charge-up time.
A Note About Air Restrictors: In this gun, the air restrictors are in the orange chain. The chains also contain a spreial spring which pushes forward on darts. The spring is held in check by the AR and is nearly impossible to remove. Thus, drilling the Air Restrictors out of the chains increases the liklihood of chain-feed jams, because the spring may push the darts forward prematurely.

Raider
Price: $30
Action: Pump action, Slamfire capable.
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 35-drum stock.
Darts: streamlines
Accuracy: Fair
Effective Range: 20 feet
Pros: Comes with a 35-drum. The shape and texture of the grips are especially comfortable.
Cons: This gun has an awkward weight distribution due to the heavy sideways drum. Tends to jam because the 35 drums cycle and feed slower than the gun can shoot. Reccomend using Stampede 18-mags or 6-mags because they can feed faster than 35-drums.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal, mag lock removal, blowgun integration on top rail
Commentary: can slam fire. huge ammo capacity (35), but other specs are average. tends to jam when slam-firing. Excellent when used in close quarters to support melee fighters.

Elite Raider ("Rampage")
Price: $29
Action: Pump action, Slamfire capable.
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 25-drum stock.
Darts: streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 25 feet
Pros: Comes with a great ammo drum! Often this blaster is purchased solely for the drum, with the blaster being discarded into a loaner-weapons bin.
Cons: This gun has an awkward weight distribution due to the heavy sideways drum.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Brian's Commentary: Basically a carbon-copy of the Raider, but with a smaller [magazine]. Personally I've found these to be hit-and-miss. 2 of 3 of these I've used have been fine and work perfectly, jamming only by user error. However, 1 of them (the one I own), has just never been quite right. Something about the mechanisms is sensitive, and thus you can get lemons.

Dart Tag Quick 16   AKA   Scavenger II
Price: $25
Action: Pump action, Slamfire capable.
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse plunger
Ammo Capacity: 16 + 1
Darts: taggers, whistlers and suction darts.
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 30 feet
Pros: Quick reloads. Can slam-fire. Similar to the Raider, but uses more accurate ammunition, and fires said ammo farther and faster than the Raider.
Cons: Magazine is non-removable. No ironsights. No tac rails. Cannot attatch nerf stocks. No forebarrel attatchments. wtf.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal, k26 spring replacement.
Commentary: This gun is basically an improvement on the Scavenger Raider configuration (see above). The q16 sports a unique quick-reload port at the top, where you can reload the active magazine. While the Scavenger-Raider can only fire streamline darts, the q16 Scavenger II works with tagger darts, whistle darts AND suction-tip darts. These types of darts tend to fly farther and straighter than streamlines.
Update: It can kind-of fire BuzzBee darts, though incrementally and with reduced range. And you should not load more than 1 or 2 at a time or you risk a massive jam.
Update 2: Streamlines sort of work - you can load streamlines manually by sliding the pump back, opening the breech door, and inserting them manually. They fire just fine like this. So in a pinch, if all you have to scavenge are streamlines, at least there's a little hope.
Update 3(2013): This gun breaks easily and jams easily. There are so many better ones to choose from!

Berserker
Price: $20
Action: Pump Action (darts) / Air Pump (missile)
Dart Propulsion: spring/plunger
Missile Propulsion: pressurized rubber bladder
Ammo Capacity: 20 darts + 1 missile
Darts: any
Accuracy: good
Effective Range: 25 feet
Pros: Good ammo capacity. Easy reload. Built-in rocket launcher.
Cons: Weird shape. Looks very 1990's.
Recommended Modifications: barrel replacements, AR removal.
Commentary: A good all-around medium range primary. This weapon is rarely used in OFS games, possibly due to its obscurity. It is exteemely good considering its cost. Missile-dart-dart combo can be used to easily kill shield guys.

Recon
Price: $18
Action: slide-cock
(basically pump action, but where the pump is on top of the gun instead of on bottom)
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 2x 6-mags stock.
Darts: streamlines
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20 feet
Pros: Clip fed. Removable everything.
Cons: --
Recommended Modifications: AR removal. Clip-lock removal. With significant work, can be modified to fire regular darts.
Commentary: A decent gun for newbies. Darts tend to jam more with age. Don't overload the gun, treat it gently, keep
all springs in neutral position when storing, etc, and it is definitely usable.

Elite Recon ("Retaliator")
Price: $20
Action: slide-cock
(basically pump action, but where the pump is on top of the gun instead of on bottom)
Propulsion Mechanism: DIRECT PLUNGER
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 12-mag stock.
Darts: streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 35 feet
Pros: Clip fed. Removable everything. Better range and accuracy than the original Recon.
Cons: --
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Commentary: A great all around blaster. Modular. Its slide mechanism leads to a slower rate of fire compared to other pump-action blasters in its class, so beware.

Rapid Fire Rifle
Price: $15
Action: lever-action
Propulsion Mechanism: plunger
Ammo Capacity: 6 shot magazine
Darts: buzz bee darts, cut darts
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20-25 feet
Pros: ???
Cons: ???
Recommended Modifications: shell catch, bayonette, blowgun integration
LT's Commentary: One of the coolest guns they make. Not too practical in a game scenario, but how many other foam guns have a working lever action? None. Shells fire out the side, realistically, so if you ever want to use this make a shell catch. Buy it for its looks and realism, again not practical for play unless heavily modded.

LongStrike
Price: $25
Action: Technically spealing it's pump action, but it was styled to seem like it was bolt action
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 2x 6-mags stock.
Darts: Streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20 feet normally; 35+ feet with modification.
Pros: Looks cool. A great gun to put a bayonette on.
Cons: Bolt action.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal, powerstock. Gunblades
Commentary: Lighter weight version of the longshot. Cheaper, sleaker, longer. But Longer Gun != Longer Range.

Turbo Fire
Price: $20 (only available at Toys R Us
Action: Pump action.
Propulsion Mechanism:
Ammo Capacity: 20 rounds
Darts: Buzzbee or Airzone darts
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: ~20-30 feet
Pros: A good simple blaster. Very light weight and easy to sling or keep off hand.
Cons: Does not use magazines so you must manually reload.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Matthew's Commentary: This is a good simple stand by [pump] gun to have, however if you’re looking at getting this I would heavily recommend getting an alpha trooper instead. While the gun is good it lacks the kind of fast reloading you get with a good magazine gun plus it cannot slam fire so it cannot shoot as fast as the alpha trooper.

Medium Range, Semi Automatic Nerf Guns

Rayven
Price: $25
Action: semi-automatic via electric motors
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 18-mag stock.
Darts: streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 25 feet
Pros: BULLPUP. Can take barrel attachments, therefore can take bayonets.
Cons: glow-in-the-dark ammo and priming magazine adds bulk and weight
Recommended Modifications: voltage mod
Kieran's Commentary: This is one of my all-time favorite blasters. The RoF is great, the flywheels can take a higher voltage without burning out over time (unlike the Barricade, RF12, T20 etc). It is an excellent primary blaster.

Elite Rayven
Price: $30
Action: semi-automatic via electric motors
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 18-mag stock.
Darts: streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 30 feet
Pros: BULLPUP. Can take barrel attachments, therefore can take bayonets.
Cons: glow-in-the-dark ammo and priming magazine adds bulk and weight
Recommended Modifications: voltage mod
Commentary: Very little has changed between the original Rayven and this one.

Stryfe
Price: $20
Action: semi-automatic via electric motors
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 6-mag stock.
Darts: streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 30 feet
Pros: non-bullpup means it can be weilded as a pistol-type gun.
Cons: non-bullpup means its awkward to use as a primary.
Recommended Modifications: voltage mod
Brian's Commentary: I believe this is the smallest of the flywheel guns. Only comes with a 6 clip, so I'd only recommend it if you have bigger clips you can use in it. Range is about 40 feet, depreciates if you fire quickly. Should be easy to mod, since all it needs is higher voltage.

Semi-Auto Tommy 20
Price: $15 for a 2-pack! (rare to find)
Action: semi-automatic via electric motors
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: 20
Darts: buzz bee micros, cut micros
Accuracy: Fair
Effective Range: 10-20 feet
Pros: 20 round drum. Can be operated one handed.
Cons: Darts can fall out of the drum if you tip it forward. Trigger and handle are awkward to hold. Loud.
Recommended Modifications: voltage increase, on/off activation mods, drum enclosure, stock removal.
OFS Commentary: It has good range, good ammo capacity, and can fire all 20 rounds out in under 4 seconds. It is relative innacurate. This is a great gun for taking out whole mobs of zombies, but not good for trying to hit anything in particular. Also, since it's a flywheel gun, it takes some getting used to.
Kieran's Comments: "This is my favorite nerf gun of all time. I think most players don't use it because it absolutely requires modification in order to not suck. I own 3 Tommy 20's and 2 Tommy 12s, and have done a lot of experimentation with them. My Juno and T23 are both made from Tommy 20s, and my GreenSpike is made from a Tommy 12. They're great little guns if you're willing to put work in."

Ultimate Rapidblast
Price: $9
Action: semi-automatic via electric motors
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: 12
Darts: buzz bee micros
Accuracy: fair
Effective Range: 10-15 feet
Pros: Requires only 1 hand to operate! Good for engaging groups.
Cons: Noisy.
Recommended Modifications: drum enclosure, on/off switch reposition, voltage increase (range), barrel shroud removal (makes clearing jams easier)
Commentary: Can fire out all 12 rounds in 2-3 seconds. This is also a good first gun for people interested in learning how to modify electric nerf guns. Costs the same as a Maverick, but is SOOO much better...

Barricade
Price: $15
Action: semi-automatic via electric flywheel motors, finger-activated feed
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: 10
Darts: any nerf-brand darts except streamlines
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20 feet (30 with 6v mod, 40+ with 9v mod)
Pros: Decent dart capacity, and can be operated entirely one-handedly.
Cons: Too big to holster. Sonetimes jams.
Recommended Modifications: voltage increase, trigger activation,
Commentary: In my experience with overclocking flywheel guns, any voltave above 6v tands to wreck the motors over time, so if you bump it up above 6v, you should also to this trigger activation mod so that the motors aren't on any more than they need to be.

a pretty good all-around gun, compared to NERF's other pistols. But compared to other flywheel guns, the power of this gun's motors are rather sub-par. Reccomended for beginners who don't want to modify their blasters.

Elite Barricade ("Stockade")
Price: $20
Action: semi-automatic via electric flywheel motors, finger-activated feed
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: 10
Darts: anything other than streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 21 feet (30 with 6v mod, 40+ with 9v mod)
Pros: [Same as Barricade] Decent dart capacity, and can be operated entirely one-handedly.
Cons: Too big to holster. Sonetimes jams.
Recommended Modifications: voltage increase, trigger activation
Commentary: One of the most common mods for the original Barricade was the trigger activation mod: moving the motor spin-up switch so pulling the trigger slightly will fire up the motors. This makes the blaster super ergonomic. Nerf, in redesigning and re releasing their blasters, had the chance to integrate this ultra common mod into their revised blaster by putting a moddle-finger activation button (such as is seen on the Stryfe, Hailfire, or Rayven) But for some reason, they fudged it up. Some one needs to be fired over this.

Medium Range, Fully Automatic Nerf Guns

Stampede
Price: $50 + $20 for 6x D batteries
Action: fully automatic via electric motors
Propulsion Mechanism: spring/plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 3x 18-mags stock.
Darts: streamlines
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 25 feet
Pros: Fully automatic. Magazine-fed.
Cons: Time delay between trigger-pull and actual firing is nearly a full second, Making this very ineffective when in semi-auto mode. 6xD batteries are Heavy!
Recommended Modifications: voltage increase, spring replacements. Comvery yo run off a single 9V battery, or from rechargable AAs (reduced weight). Or bullpup casemod.
Commentary: Nerf's first select-fire battle rifle. Hopefully they make a better one in the future. Try to trade someone for a 35-drum if you don't already have one.

Elite Rapidstrike
Price: $40
Action: fully automatic via electric flywheel motors and electric push-rod
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel; Electric auto-feeder. Uses 4x C batteries.
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with an clear 18-mag stock.
Darts: elite streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20ish feet
Pros: On fresh batteries, it has a good rate of fire, a good spin-up time, and good accuracy. The use of C batteries makes this significantly lighter than its predecessor the Stampede (Which uses 6x Ds)
Cons: Cannot effectively be used one-handed. C-Battery pack is in the front grip. This gives the blaster an unusual weight distibution, but ends up being very balenced when used 2-handed.
Recommended Modifications: Streamline Compatability mod to allow this to fire older non-elite streamlines.
Commentary: This seems more useful as a secondary, room-clearing blaster than a primary.
Dakota's Commentary: Best use is as a secondary unless modified. Good accuracy at extreme close ranges, but almost zero power. This should be used as an SMG.

Ammo Capacity: 20
Darts: short micros,
Accuracy: Good/Fair
Effective Range: 20-30 feet
Pros: Fully Automatic.
Cons: Noisy. Full-auto-only; no select-fire.
Recommended Modifications: voltage increase, drum enclosure (keeps darts from falling out). Unlike its semi-automatic cousin, the voltage mods for this gun are tricky because require separating the plunger and flywheels from 1 into 2 separate curcuits.
Commentary: a pretty good stock gun.

Dart Tag Swarmfire
Price: $28
Action: fully automatic via electric motor-powered plunger
Propulsion Mechanism: electric-motoriced priming bar connected to spring and plunger
Ammo Capacity: 20
Darts: any
Accuracy: fair
Effective Range: 15-20 feet
Pros: Fully Automatic.
Cons: Noisy - sounds like a hair dryer. Worse noise than the Automatic Tommy 20!
Commentary: This, and the vulcan, are the only full-auto guns on the market than can fire ANY kind of ammunition. If you're too lazy to prime your gun, and just can't be bothered to sort your darts, and you sure as heck don't want to put fourth the effort to carry around a heavy Vulcan, use this! You lazy fuck.

Shotguns

To be classed as a shotgun, a blaster must fire 2 or more projectiles at once.

Rough Cut
Price: $18
Action: pump
Propulsion Mechanism: twin direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 4x 2-round bursts (8 darts total)
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 35 feet
Pros: Hard to miss/dodge when firing multiple rounds in one shot. Great range for a shotgun.
Cons: Only fires 2 rounds per blast
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Commentary: This is an excellent secondary weapon. Reloads are decently quick. It features a unique misfire-preventing barrel valve system that allows it to fire 2 darts at once even if darts are not side by side. This is our #1 pick within the shotgun section.

Lanard Shotgun
Price: $25
Action: pump
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 4x 3-round bursts (12 darts total)
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 10 feet (unmodified), 20+ feet (modified)
Pros: Hard to miss/dodge when firing multiple rounds in one shot. Has 4 3-dart bursts before needing to reload!
Cons: requires modification to be useful, because its stock ranges are piss poor.
Recommended Modifications: internal AR removal, spring replacement. blowgun integration.
Commentary: This is a fairly unique blaster.

Sledge Fire

Price: $28

Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: #~20-30 feet
Pros: Hard to miss/dodge when firing multiple rounds in one shot.
Cons: Long reload time. Shell-based loading system is impractical in compeditive nerf games.
Recommended Modifications: Not much, really. Cut everything off, and single this? The PT is enormous and would make for an excellent singled blaster.
Commentary: It is in improvement over the Bouble Shot and Barrel Break systems. But those were extremely flawed to begin with. If you want a shotgun, get a Lanard Shotgun or a Rough Cut.

Double Shot
Price: 10
Action: break
Propulsion Mechanism: spring/plunger
Ammo Capacity: 1x 2-round burst. Darts can be fired individually.
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 15-20 feet
Pros: Hard to miss/dodge when firing multiple rounds in one shot. Looks cool. The way spent shells fly out is rather cool if you're into that sort of thing.
Cons: Long reload time. Shell-based loading system is impractical in compeditive nerf games.
Recommended Modifications: Sawed-off barrel, AR removal (ARs are on the shells)
Commentary: IT looks cool. After firing, when you break the barrel open, the spent shells are eject out onto the floor with little built-in springs. While this may seem cool, imagine trying to use this bullshit in combat! No one wants to go around picking up spent shell casings to be reloaded!

Barrel Break
Price: 10
Action: break
Propulsion Mechanism: spring/plunger
Ammo Capacity: 1x 2-round burst. Darts can be fired individually.
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 10 feet
Pros: Hard to miss/dodge when firing multiple rounds in one shot. Looks really cool.
Cons: Shit range. Long reload time. Break-based loading system is impractical in compeditive nerf games.
Recommended Modifications: Sawed-off barrel, AR removal. Can reach ranges of 20 feet with minimal modification
Commentary: cool looking, but stupid reload mechanism. not reccomended unless you plan to mod it

Pistols: Revolvers

Maverick (The original nerf revolver)
Price: $9
Action: slide-cock
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse plunger
Ammo Capacity: 6
Darts: any
Accuracy: fair/poor
Effective Range: 10-12 feet
Pros: cheap and commonplace.
Cons: range and accuracy suck balls.
Recommended Modifications: turret release, AR removal, pennied spring. Holster.
Commentary: This blaster is the butt of many-a nerf joke. It sports terrible ranges, jamming problems, aging problems, the slide axel is prone to giving out, and the performance is overally pretty shitty. AR removal gives nominal performance increase. Nerf has improver on the concept of a 6-shot sidearm in more recent iterations...

Spectre (Maverick 1.1)
Price: $15
Action: slide-cock
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse plunger
Ammo Capacity: 5
Darts: any, in theory
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 15-20 feet
Pros: Slightly better performance than a Maverick. Detachable stock and barrel
Cons: only 5 shots.
Recommended Modifications: Make a holster. AR removal.
Commentary: Nerf ATTEMPTED to fix all the problems with the Maverick. The Spectre shoots farther, the incomplete-rotation problems are mostly gone. It's more holstarable, and takes barrel, stock and rail attatchments. And yet, NERF still failed to fix the maverick. The Spectre is unreliable as fuck, jams frequently, and is very picky about what dsarts it will fire. They also age quickly, and with age comes severly reduced range. We recomend avoiding this blaster alltogether.

Strongarm (Maverick 2.0)
Price: $15
Action: slide-cock. Can slamfire.
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 6 in rotating barrel
Darts: any
Accuracy: Great
Effective Range: 30 feet
Pros: Does not suffer from most of the problems associated with the original Maverick!
Cons: Less holsterable than its predecessor the Spectre.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Commentary: They finally fixed the Maverick.

Hammershot (Maverick 3.0)
Price: $15 (only available at Target)
Action: faux 'hammer' which is pulled back by user's thumb.
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 5
Darts: any*
*anything other than the original orange streamline darts. With ARs removed, it can also fire the original streamline darts.
Accuracy: Great!
Effective Range 35 feet
Pros: CAN BE USED ONE-HANDED! Slim profile means it can effectively be used in a holster without having to use the sort of gigantic holsters seen with Mavericks and Strongarms. It also has excellent range and accuracy.
Cons: --
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Brian's Commentary: This is a truly awesome weapon. Definitely a Nerf item that will be remembered among the all-time greats. Using a hammer design instead of the normal pull or slide mechanism, this gun (with big enough hands) can be one-handed. This is a huge leap forward because not only is the mechanism easy to pull back with one-thumb, it actually has very good range, reliability, and accuracy. Don't get me wrong, the range isn't the best, the accuracy isn't the best, and I haven't had the gun fail me yet... but the combination is pretty much bang on what you want from one of these. It is so coveted and wanted that all of the nearby Target stores (Target exclusive gun, btw) have been sold out of them for weeks. You can buy them online as well for $22.55 (as of this writing), but in-store they are $15. It is by far the best all-rounder there is.

Sweet Revenge
Price: $20
Action: faux 'hammer' which is pulled back by user's thumb.
Propulsion Mechanism: angled direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 5
Darts: any*
*anything other than the original orange streamline darts. With ARs removed, it can also fire the original streamline darts.
Accuracy: Great
Effective Range: 35 feet
Pros: Comes with a Holster!!. A good quality holster at that.
Cons: Featuers the elongated dart AR pegs that are showing up in a lot of the new Elite blasters. These pegs prevent older orange streamlines from being used. If you remove the air restrictors, this is no longer a problem.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Kieran's Commentary: This is literally a Hammershot with a modified shell. The internal mechanisms are identical to the hammershot. The performance is likewise identical.
OFS Commentary: The holster it comes with is a legitimate, hard plactic concealed-carry-style holster. This is clearly designed to be used as a secondary/backup along with some other nerf blaster. Nice to see Nerf marketing to women instead of just men. There are plenty of female HvZ players out there.

Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 8
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20 feet
Pros: Looks cool. Has 2 more shots than a Maverick and slightly better performence.
Cons: is pretty big
Recommended Modifications: AR removal, removal of the 'cage' surrounding the hammer mechanism.
Commentary: This is a great blaster for cosplays. It looks like a steampunk western gun. It has a faux hammer that 'fires' when you pull the Trigger. The hammer is entirely cosmetic.

FireFly
(Classed as a revolver due to range and mechanism. Is a bit large for a pistol.)
Price: $20
Action: slide-cock
Propulsion Mechanism: spring/plunger
Ammo Capacity: 8 + 8 in stock
Darts: all
Accuracy: Fair
Effective Range: 15 feet
Pros: Bulpup. Quick to reload.
Cons: Terrible power, slider is awkward to cock, stupid glow in dark thing can give your position away.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal
Commentary: We reccomend never buying this gun. But that's just our opinion.

Tek 6

Price: $6
Action: slide-cock
Propulsion Mechanism: spring/plunger
Ammo Capacity: 6

Pros: cheaper than the maverick
Cons: even maverick owners will laugh at you for using this, lol
Recommended Modifications: AR removal, barrel replacements. With a lot of work, can reach ranges of 20+ feet.
Commentary: cheap alternative to the maverick. Performance is dismal overall, but acceptable given the price.

Pistols: Single Shot

Nite Finder
Price: $8
Action: muzzle loaded,
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 1 +2
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good, Excellent with modified
Effective Range: 12 feet (unmodified), 40+ feet (modified)
Pros:
Cons: Underside and light are stupid and make holstering troublesome. Stock performance is bad. Should never be used without modification.
Recommended Modifications: Spring replacement (#49), AR removal, 17/32" brass barrel, 1/2" PVC barrel flashlight integration, dart rack alterations, holstering.
Commentary: When modified, its accuracy and range rivals that of a Longshot. Te internals of newer models (as of 2010) are glued togehter, such that removing the AR pretty much requires a brass or pvc barrel replacement as well. Modifying the gun to fire really far accurately typically costs twice the origional cost of the nite finder. OFS frequently sells nitefinders modified NFs as fundraisers.

Elite NiteFinder "Firestrike" (Nitefinder 2.0)
Price: $10
Action: muzzle loaded
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 1 +2
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good, Excellent with modified
Effective Range: 20 feet (unmodified), 40+ feet (modified)
Pros: Slightly better stock performance than the non-Elite variant. More compact and holsterable than its predecessor.
Cons: Underside and light are stupid and make holstering troublesome. Stock performance is bad. Should never be used without modification.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Commentary: In the nerf mods community, it was an extremely common mod to cut off part of the gun to make it fit in a holster. NERF has made the next iteration more compact such that shell modification is no longer required. Good job, Nerf!

ReBelle NiteFinder AKA "Pink Crush"
Price: $10
Action: muzzle loaded
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 1 +2
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good, Excellent with modified
Effective Range: 20 feet (unmodified), 40+ feet (modified)
Pros: Same as NiteFinder, listed above.
Cons: Same as NiteFinder, listed above. Has stupid useless pink 'bow' plastic thing which will need to be removed if you plan on using a holster.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Commentary: This is a reshell clone of the NiteFinders listed above. The stats are the same. Its nice to see NERF breaking away from outdated gender norms and marketing guns to girls too.

Strike Fire

Price: $20 for 2-pack
Action: muzzle loaded,
Propulsion Mechanism: spring and direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 1 +5

Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 12 feet (unmodified), 20+ feet (modified)
Pros: Small, holsterable. Has a tac-rail clip on the top (so this gun can be attatched to other gun's tac rails)
Cons: Weak.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal, barrel replacement. Possible a dart rack alteration.
Commentary: stock performance is bad. When modified, its accuracy and range can be greatly improved.

Pros: Super compact. Uses durect plunger. Very simple design means few failures.
Cons: well, it's a derringer

Price: $7
Action: Muzzle loader; downward yank on plunger tee
Propulsion Mechanism: Direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 3
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 35 feet
Pros: Has 3 shots. pressure-valves in the barrel mean it will fire 3 shots without the user needing to rotate the barrels. Ergonomic.
Cons:
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Brian's Commentary: The smallest weapon in the Nerf Elite arsenal, you'd expect it to be terrible. However, this actually has the best range of any of the Nerf Elite guns I've used. The accuracy is pretty standard. There is pretty much nothing to go wrong on it either. At $7 dollars, it's a steal.

Tek 3
Price: $3
Action: plunger yank with manual rotation
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 3
Darts: any
Accuracy: fair
Effective Range: 8 feet
Pros: had a little belt clip thingy
Cons: turret must be manually rotated between shots
Recommended Modifications: none
Commentary: In Olympia, these can often be found in a 4-pack for $9 at the Grocery Outlet on Harrison & Division. They have a built-in belt clip. Considering their price, these are pretty good for a whole team to have as a tertiary/backup gun.

High-Capacity Support Weapons

Weapons in this class have huge ammo capacities, are relatively bulky weapons and shoot medium-to-short ranges.

Vulcan
Price: ~$50 +$20(6x D batteries)
Action: fully automatic via electric motors
Propulsion Mechanism: motorized spring/plunger
Ammo Capacity: Belt-fed. Ammo capacity is potentially infinite. Comes with 1x 25-round belt section. Belts can be connected together via built-in screw-links. Typically seen in games with 75-150 round belts.
Darts: literally any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: ~20 feet
Pros: Fully fucking automatic
Cons: Big and Heavy. Medium/short-ish range.
Recommended Modifications: voltage increase, more ammo. this motherfucker.
OFS Commentary: We love the Vulcan. It looks, and feels, fantastic to fire. It's the sort of gun that makes grown geeks don camouflage face paint, full fatigues and ammo bandoliers, stick thumb-thick cigars between their teeth and pose for the camera. The battery-powered firing mechanism feels slick and powerful - far more so than any other NERF gun - and it's a pleasure to unleash.
Kieran's Commentary: The real advantage to using this gun, its its extensable ammo chains. Please, please do not let me catch you using this with only 25 rounds. Personally, I have a 175 round chain. Kent has a 125 and has been known to have an "ammo guy" to help him carry around all those rounds. Having an ammo-carrying guy who can cover you while you reload is highly reccomended.

HailFire
Price: $40
Action: semi-automatic via electric motors.
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: 144!!. This is the highest capacity non-belt-fed blaster every made. Can hold up to 8x standard NERF magazines, for a total of 144 rounds. Comes with 4x 6-mags stock.
Darts: streamline and elite streamline
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 25 feet
Pros: Slightly better range than the Vulcan. More compact than the Vulcan, Weighs less than the Vulcan.
Cons: Mush slower rate of fire than the vulcan. Tends to jam about onces every 7 shots if you're not careful.
Recommended Modifications: Bump up the voltage. Convert it to run off of a rechargable battery pack.
Commentary: This concept has a lot of potential. There are some serious problems with the feed mechanism which sadly cause this puppy to jam quite a lot. We look forward to seeing how other nerfers in the online mod communities will tackle this interesting engineering problem.

Punisher
Price: $40 +$14(6x C batteries)
Action: fully automatic via electric motors
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel with electric feed.
Ammo Capacity: Belt-fed. Ammo capacity is potentially infinite. Comes with 1x 30-round belt section. Belts can be connected together via duct tape. Typically seen in games with 60-90 round belts.
Darts: anything except streamlines
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: ~25 feet
Pros: Fearsome looking. The barrel can spin up and stay spinning without the gun actually firing. So you can sit there, holding the line, with a badass looking gatlin gun. Makes you feel like Rambo.
Cons: Big and Heavy for what it is. When stock, its rate of fire is sub-par. MAJOR CON: Unlike the Nerf/Vulcan, AirZone does not sell extra chains for this blaster. The only way to get more chain links is to purchase another blaster which uses these chains. Thankfully, as of 2013, Airzone has released a second cheaper blaster (the QuickFire Rifle) from which chains may be harvested.
Recommended Modifications: Electrical rewiring, flywheel voltage increase. this
Kieran's Modification Commentary: SEPARATE THE MAIN FIRING ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT INTO TWO SEPARATE CIRCUITS. When stock, the flywheels and the pushrod motors run from the same circuit, wired in paralell. Ideally, you would increase the voltage of both, but you'll want to have a higher voltage going to the flywheels.
Commentary: The main gripe that the internet nerf modding community has with the Punisher, has been that you cannot buy spare amme chains for it! By comparison, the you can buy spare 25-rnd chains for the Vulcan for $15. This is what you get when you want a toy manufacturer wants to make a heavy high-capacity Vulcan-clone but then cheaps-out and cut corners left and right. That being said, this gun is pretty awesome. Many-a-foe will simply break and run when they see it spin up. With internal electrical modifications, its performance can be very very greatly improved.

Power Strike 48
Price: $25
Action: pump action
Propulsion Mechanism: Electric flywheel.
Ammo Capacity: 48
(12 tubes with 4 darts each)
Darts: anything except streamlines
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20-30 feet
Pros: Has a beautifully simple firing mechanism which never jams. Huge capacity considering the size of the blaster. Of the blasters classed as High-Cap Support guns, this is by far the quickest to reload.
Cons: Relatively low ammo capacity compared to other weapons in its class (lol).
Recommended Modifications: Move the on/off switch from the top, onto the trigger. Voltage increase.
Commentary : This is a great survival-oriented high-capacity gun. This is the only weapon in its class which can safely be used solo in survival games.
Where to Buy: Because AirZone is an in-house Toys R Us brand, the only place this gun can be bought is Toys R Us. Cheapest place to get ammo (in olympia/lacey/tumwater area) is WalMart, which sells 51-packs of Powershot-compatable BuzzBee ammo for $9.99

Suppressive

The blasters in this section have the highest rates of fire of any guns on this page. They are useful in certain games for quickly killing foes/NPCs that have especially high HP.

Magstrike
Price: $25
Action: air pump
Propulsion Mechanism: rubber bladder
Ammo Capacity: 10 [slide magazine]
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 5-15 feet
Pros: Very high rate of fire. Can fire all 10 rounds in under 2 seconds.
Cons: Air pump
Recommended Modifications: HPA Tank, or an Electric Air Compressor
Commentary: Half the ammo capacity of the RF 20, but if you have 3 or more spare mags, this is worth it. If you hook your magstrike up to some sort of automatic ait pressure system, then you basically have a nerf flamethrower.

RapidFire 20
Price: $25
Action: Air Pump (~2 pumps per dart)
Propulsion Mechanism: rubber bladder
Ammo Capacity: 20
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20 feet
Pros: Very high rate of fire. Can fire all 20 rounds in under 3 seconds.
Cons: It requires 30-40 pumps, and the darts take a long time to reload in the front.
Recommended Modifications: pump mod. removable forebarrels, hpa tank
Commentary: It has a select fire switch and can fire semi-auto or full auto. It shoots really really fast.

Hornet
Price: $20
Action: air pump (10-15 pumps to fire)
Propulsion Mechanism: rubber air bladder
Ammo Capacity: 6 darts
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 30 feet
Pros: Can fire all 6 darts in under 1 second. Can also fire each dart individually. Good accuracy and range.
Cons: Air pump takes a while to prime.
Modification Potential: Each barrel has its own air chamber, and is connected to the main pump using repositionable rubber tubing. Oh, the possibilities!
Commentary: Good for insta-killing Tank Zombies.

Tetra Strke
Price: $8
Action: air pump (8 pumps to fire)
Propulsion Mechanism: rubber air bladder
Ammo Capacity: 4 darts
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20 feet
Pros: It shoots 4 darts, and fits well on a belt holster or large pocket
Cons: Dont miss!
Recommended Modifications: Make a hip holster!
Commentary: More of a pistol than the other suppressives in its class, this blaster sports a measily 4-shots. But it can put all 4 shots downrange in under a second.
Where to Buy: In Olympia, the only place we've been able to find the Tetra Strike is the Toys R Us on the westside, and it's only intermittently in stock there. Good luck! If you can get your hands on one, it's well worth it.

Rocket Launchers

The blasters in this section are counted as "rocket launchers". Rocket launchers instant-kill anything they hit, destroy shields, and even scores a hit on a player when the missile hits their gun.

Titan
Price: $25
Action: air pump (~20-30 pumps to fire)
Propulsion Mechanism: Large pressurized air tank (like the size of a soda can)
Ammo Capacity: 1 missile
Darts: nerf-brand titan mega missile
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 40 feet
Pros: Big, relatively aerodynamic rocket shoots far and is actually kind of accurate.
Cons: you pretty much have to make your own replacement rockets.
Recommended Modifications: minimization, integration into other guns
Commentary: Even though it fires a big-ass rocket, this blaster has one of the longest ranges of any unmodified blaster ever made. However, good luck actually hitting anything past 20 or so feet, lol.

Ultimate Missile Blast
Price: $14
Action: air pump (4 pumps to fire)
Propulsion Mechanism: pressurized air tank
Ammo Capacity: 1 missile
Darts: buzz bee missile
Accuracy: Fair
Effective Range: 15 feet
Pros: Cheap air pump gun for singling.
Cons: Retardedly large.
Recommended Modifications: Single it, and make a sniper.
Commentary: when fired, the white missiles turn red via internal LED lights, which make them much easier to find in the dark than Titan missiles. poor range. relatively quick reload compared to other missile launchers.

When singled+hoppered, ranges are in excess of 80ft using 1" stefans. This is OFS's weapon of choice for sniper conversions.

Berserker Center Missile
The Buzz Bee Berserker is a 20-shot pump-action blaster that has a built-in missile launcher and a secondary-fire trigger. It fires standard Buzz Bee missiles.

…Refer to Buzz Bee Berserker in the Medium-Range-Pump-Action Blasters section.

Long Range

Blowgun
Price: $2-$10 depending on quality
Action: rear loading
Propulsion Mechanism: breath!
Ammo Capacity: 1
Darts: anything
Accuracy: Excellent
Effective Range: 40+ feet
Pros: Long rage and good accuracy
Cons: you'd better have a secondary weapon!
Recommended Modifications: commonly integrated into oter guns or melee weapons.
Commentary: takes some training and lung power to really get kills at a distance. It is a very poor weapon on its own, and does require a wing man to be used effectively in the field.

Action: Pump-action
Propulsion Mechanism: Direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 4 darts, rearloading or frontloading
Darts (rearloaded): streamline, elite streamline, stefans
Darts (frontloaded): any
Accuracy: Excellent
Effective Range: 50-75 feet
Pros: Very accurate, very good range, can fire 4 shots between reloads.
Cons: Must be assembled, cannot be bought in stores.
Recommended Modifications: This whole thing is a recomended modification.
Commentary: This is a very common modification for the Lanard Shotgun. So common, infact, that it deserves its own section. This blaster is used as a secondary weapon in long-range compeditive nerfing circles, and makes an extremely good primary at HvZ events.

Nerf LongShot
Price: $30
Action: bolt action
Propulsion Mechanism: Direct Plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with 2x 6-mags stock.
Darts: Streamline
Accuracy: Good/Excellent
Effective Range: 25 feet normally; 50+ feet with modification.
Pros: Direct plunger. Can reach ridiculous ranges.
Cons: Old, Hard to find.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal, spring replacement, bolt sled re-enforcement. Pump grip.
Commentary: rarely jams. hard to find. large plunger chamber

Nerf Centurion
Price: $50
Action: Sliding Bolt.
Propulsion Mechanism: Direct Plunger
Ammo Capacity: 6-round mega-mag
Darts: Super Mega darts. 1" diameter.
Accuracy: Fair
Effective Range: 30 feet
Pros: Looks intimidating
Cons: effective range is less than half what is claimed on the box.
Recommended Modifications: #AR removal.
Commentary: This blaster got its name because it supposedly can put a dary 100 feet down range. 100.....centurion…..get it? Well, like most on-box range claims, this proves to be wildly exaggerated. Still, it has a HUGE plunger tube. Its draw is fucking enormous. It has unprecedented modding potential and could be the next Longshot.

Buzz Bee Rangemaster
Price: $18
Action: Breech Loaded. Unique airtank pump built into the breech handle.
Propulsion Mechanism: plastic pressurized air tank
Ammo Capacity: 1 (single shot bolt action)
Darts: any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20 feet stock. 40+ accurate feet when modded.
Pros: Air-pump-powered blasters are enormously popular in compeditive nerfing circles. This blaster has huge modding pitential and can acheve phenominal ranges if done correctly.
Cons: Slow rate of fire compared to other long-range blaster solutions.
Recommended Modifications: Seal reinforcements. Reinforce the resistor spring inside the pump overpressure release valve for increased ranges.
Commentary: Honestly, its a shit gun when stock. With proper modification, it can become an excellent sniper though.

Bolt Action

Buzz Bee Hunter
Price: $9 (commonly seen at Grocery outlet for 3)
Action: bolt action
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 1 +4
Darts: any short or cut dart
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 20 feet, 30 when modded
Pros: This is a great blaster for cosplay, or for old-timey LARP games. It has a realistic, functioning bolt which may add much flavor to a game.
Cons: Its bad by compeditive nerfing standards
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Commentary: Not generally used in HvZ.

Awful

It is not our intent to list every shitty blaster on the market. Rather, this section shall be used to list new and commonly available, commonly used shitty blasters. Rarer shitty blasters will simply not be in this guide.

Deploy
Price: $20
Action: pump
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse plunger
Ammo Capacity: Any standard NERF magazine. Comes with a 6-mag stock.
Darts: Streamlines
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 12-15"
Pros: Almost never jams.
Cons: Shitty range. Flashlight sucks.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal increases range a little
Commentary: Has this fun, novelty unfolding feature. So you can imagine being a secret agent or something. How quaint. We recommend never buying this gun. Useful for little children and their imaginations, not useful in Humans Vs Zombies games. But that's just our opinion.

Every single Charmed blaster

ReBelle Crossbow
Price: $25
Action: pump
Propulsion Mechanism: inverse/direct? plunger
Ammo Capacity: 6
Darts: Any
Accuracy: Good
Effective Range: 15"
Pros: almost never jams.
Cons: This blaster is basically a pistol, but it has a non-removable stock and silly useless crossbow arms.
Recommended Modifications: AR removal.
Commentary: Honestly the performance isnt terrible. Its just not worth $25. Or even $15. It is a 6-shot pistol with a bunch of extra plastic. For the price, you could get a legit mag-fed 18-shot gun. Or you could get the ReBelle Sweet Revenge, which is literally the same gun housed in a smaller more efficient shell (and $5 cheaper). We recommend never buying this gun. But that's just our opinion.

ReBelle Longbow
Price: $40
Action: spring-n-string pully system
Propulsion Mechanism: direct plunger
Ammo Capacity: 1
Darts: Any
Accuracy: Fair
Effective Range: 15-20
Pros: Almost never jams.....because it only has one bullet!
Cons: It Lies! It makes you think you are using a real bow, but on the inside, its just a direct plunger assembly. And the fact that it uses that string pulley system, means there's a fire delay when you release. Its actually a really dumb mechanism once you get it open.
Recommended Modifications: AR Removal
Commentary: What the fuck is with ReBelel and bows/crossbows? This is a $40 Nite Finder. For the price, you could get a Hail Fire or a Stampede. We recommend never buying this gun. But that's just our opinion.
Rachel's Commentary: I wish they would release a pink and purple Vulcan. Laaame.
